Synopsis — The Lacemaker's Daughter
In 1770, Susannah Brigginshaw is an eleven year old girl living in poverty in Offwell, Devon.
A lacemaker like her mother, she and her younger brother, Peter, suffer hardship when their mother dies of a fever and their father leaves them to their fate.
Peter, who is crippled, cannot help and the whole burden for their living falls to Susannah, who tries her best to keep them fed and warm.
But when their cottage collapses, they are forced to move to the nearby town of Honiton to survive, where Peter is apprenticed to a joiner, eventually becoming the owner of the business, while Susannah continues to make lace.
Only through their love for each other, and supportive and caring friends do the two children grow to become healthy and happy members of their community.
The Lacemaker’s Daughter is a tale of resilience and love in a harsh and unforgiving age.
